DEC to transfer preschool education to private or voluntary organisation

Fri, 17 Feb 2012

The Department of Education and Children is to stop providing free preschool and nursery places from this summer.

The DEC has confirmed it's cutting its funding for the places.

It plans to transfer preschool education to a private or voluntary organisation.

There are also plans to close Bride Infants School, the Family Library on Westmoreland Road and to end the Primary Modern Language Service.

The Department says it hopes to be able to redeploy as many staff as possible, and that redundancies will be a last resort.

Many parents aren't happy that at the news that free nursery places will no longer be provided by the Government, and an online petition against the move has been set up.

Over 600 people had put their names to the petition by lunchtime.
