Minister faces questions about nursery grants

Fri, 13 Apr 2012

Plans to give parents a grant to send their children to private nurseries will dominate the question paper in this month's sitting of Tynwald.

MLC Dudley Butt wants to know what the hourly rates will be of the nurseries.

Mr Butt, who quit the Department of Education over the decision to end Government funded preschools, also asks how those with behavioural problems will be eligible for additional funding.

He'll also wants to know what measures are in place to make sure the same standard of education is provided at the private facilities as is currently given at Government funded preschools.

Michael MHK Alfred Cannan has a question about discussions between the Department of Education and providers before Peter Karran was appointed Education Minister.

It was announced last month that the DEC is to provide a three hundred and fifty pound credit to parents to send their child to a private nursery from the next academic year.

Private providers are also being given the chance to let facilities currently used by the Department.

The questions will be answered by Education Minister Peter Karran on Tuesday.
