Landlords asked to sign up to registration scheme

Wed, 22 Aug 2012

Landlords on the Isle of Man will be asked to sign up to a voluntary registration scheme by the end of the year if new proposals are put into place.

The Department of Social Care is aiming to improve the quality of accommodation at the lower end of the private sector.

Over 100 people including landlords and tenants responded to a public consultation which was launched earlier this year with 82 per cent in favour of a registration scheme.

Social Care Minister Chris Robertshaw says it’s part of government’s responsibility to ensure accommodation is of a good quality and is totally committed to improving living standards and tenancy conditions.

Landlords who sign up to the scheme will be given support from the department.

It will also provide a statutory basis for the mandatory registration of private landlords on the Island.
