Passports introduced for Island's basking sharks

Sat, 01 Sep 2012

The Manx Basking Shark Watch has received a significant financial boost which is set to progress some sophisticated research methods into the off season habits of the gentle giants.

£20,000 has been allotted to the watch from the Manx Lottery Trust.

The money will go towards a shark passport tagging system, which will utilise satellite technology to track their movements in the times of the year where little is known of their whereabouts.

These new tags are designed to stay on the shark’s fins for up to five years, giving researchers a much broader picture from which collate their findings.
