Food security strategy being developed

The government is working to develop a food security strategy for the Isle of Man.

It’s a project being led by the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture which says there are a number of risks due to extended supply chains.

Risk areas are said to include the weather, as the majority of the Island’s food is imported by sea, fuel costs and the demand for cheaper produce.

The need for reliable food chains has hit the headlines recently due to the Tesco horse meat scandal which affected budget products.

Minister Phil Gawne says he’s had numerous discussions about increasing the amount of local produce stocked by the retailer but has got nowhere:
