New shipping line committed to Manx workers

Fri, 27 Sep 2013

The Ellan Vannin Line says it’s committed to employing Manx workers when it launches its new freight service.

The company has came under fire from the RMT union which claims the venture is based on employing low-cost foreign crew and flags of convenience.

However EVL says its been the intention from the start to employ Manx workers and wants to introduce a career programme for youngsters.

It also says it would prefer to have the vessel registered in the Isle of Man flying the Manx flag.

Captain Kurt Buchholz says he is concerned that the union’s stance is a desperate attempt to seek support from other unions and the government.
