Island leads in solving queenie sustainability problem

The Island is currently leading the way in finding solutions to the queen scallop sustainability problem.

Over fishing has resulted in declining stocks with tough measures introduced to ensure the valuable food export can once again flourish.

Working alongside the UK fisheries' administrations DEFA has developed a sustainability blue print that must be followed by commercial fishing boats.

Queenies are worth £2.5 million a year to the Island's economy, and create many jobs.

Restrictions and fishing caps were imposed as a way of protecting stocks; DEFA Minister Richard Ronan says it's been tough, but essential:
