88 per cent of the prisoners on the Isle of Man are in some form of paid work.

That's according to figures released by the Department of Home Affairs last week.

There are over 90 paid activities available for the 80 inmates - in March nine prisoners had chosen full-time education as their paid activity and nine were not working.

The department says the majority of jobs could be deemed as "menial" with work including recycling, gardening, horticulture and orderly positions.

Prisoners are invited to apply for advertised work weekly, rather than it being allocated to them - this, the prison says, means that the tasks are carried out to a better standard.
