Man stole charity boxes to fund heroin habit

Wed, 01 Jul 2015

A thief who stole three charity collection boxes to fund his heroin habit says he's "ashamed" of his actions.

27-year-old Kristopher Coward appeared at Douglas Courthouse yesterday where he pleaded guilty to three counts of theft.

On May 31st he went to St Heliers Guest House on Douglas Promenade where he enquired about making a booking before stealing a Barnardos collection box.

The following day he went into the Lexicon bookshop on Strand Street where he enquired about ordering a book - staff members described him as "fidgety" and "agitated".

This time Coward stole charity boxes intended for the Hyperbaric Chamber and the Isle of Man Breast Cancer Unit Appeal.

When police later arrested Coward he told them there'd been around £70 in the boxes which he'd spent on heroin - his advocate told the court he'd been "coming down" at the time.

Social enquiry reports have been requested - Coward will be sentenced on August 4th.
