Two heroin addicts have been sent to prison after resorting to "petty shoplifting" to fund their habit.

33-year-old Pawel Maciag and 31-year-old Krzysztof Kubasiak were both jailed after admitting charges of theft.

The two Douglas men stole a pair of boots, worth £40, from TK Maxx and perfume and aftershave from Boots on Strand Street in August.

At Douglas Courthouse yesterday the court was told the duo, who are both on benefits, had stolen the items to sell on so they could buy heroin.

Maciag's advocate told the court it was a "vile drug" which had "clearly blighted his life" - adding if he didn't stop taking it he would "not be long for this world".

Sentencing them Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said there was no realistic alternative to custody - she sentenced Kubasiak to 16 weeks and handed Maciag a 10 week sentence.
