Shoplifter jailed after stealing from Tynwald Mills

Fri, 09 Oct 2015

A Pulrose woman who stole almost £750 worth of clothes from Tynwald Mills has been jailed.

28-year-old Tara Cowell was handed an eight week prison sentence after previously pleading guilty to theft.

She, along with a friend, stole the items from the Mill Shop on April 13th - the duo gathered the items and left with them still on the hangers; they were never recovered.

At Douglas Courthouse this week her advocate told the court she was going through a "period of turmoil" at the time and wasn't thinking clearly on the day due to self-medicating.

Sentencing her Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said shoplifting caused "considerable inconvenience to shopkeepers" - she also committed her to the Court of General Gaol Delivery for other offences.

Cowell has previously pleaded not guilty to offences of affray, assault causing actual bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon following an alleged incident in Willaston on April 22nd.
