Fisherman fined for catching king scallops

Illegal fishing for king scallops has cost a trawler master £5,000.

Ryan Newall from County Down appeared before Magistrates at Douglas Courthouse on Tuesday.

He admitted fishing in a closed area off the north-west coast of the Island on Sunday, November 1st - his Irish-registered vessel 'Golden Fleece' was detained by the fisheries protection vessel.

Newall was fined and ordered to pay court costs of £125 - he was also told to forfeit his catch worth £2,163.
