Live fire facility will improve emergency response

Construction work has started on a new live fire training facility which will ensure Island firefighters are better prepared for emergencies.

Diggers are on the site at the rear of the Energy from Waste Plant - once the initial groundwork is complete a series of interconnected compartments will be shipped over.

The units will be used to simulate real-life scenarios with the ability to control heat, humidity, smoke and restricted visibility.

It means firefighters will no longer have to be sent away for training - deputy chief fire officer John Murtagh says it's crucial:
