'Careless' BBQ use causes large fire

Tue, 07 Jun 2016

Fire crews were sent out to two 'significant' grass fires yesterday.

In the morning they attended a grass fire on the railway line in Santon - the area was dampened down whilst the train was held at Santon station.

At 4.20pm multiple 999 calls were made from members of the public reporting a large fire on the headland at Groudle Glen.

Three pumps from Douglas and Laxey attended the area where the fire had spread along the headland - crews spent two hours damping down hot spots to ensure it didn't flare up again; approximately 200 square meters of the headland was involved.

The Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service says it was caused by 'careless' BBQ use - people are now being urged to be extra vigilant as the ground is extremely dry and fires will spread quickly.
