Jail for man who pooed in police cell

Mon, 13 Jun 2016

A Douglas man who defecated in a cell and smeared faeces over his hands in a bid to obstruct police has been jailed.
55-year-old Graham Johnson foiled attempts by officers to swab his hands for accelerant after he was arrested on suspicion of arson on March 26th.
He'd been seen lighting a piece of paper and putting it into a wheelie bin - which then set on fire - in Strand Lane the night before.
Johnson later pleaded guilty to arson and obstructing police - at Douglas Courthouse last week his advocate described his actions as "strange" and "particularly unpleasant".
He said the piece of paper belonged to Johnson's flatmate and he'd decided to burn it because he suspected it was connected to drugs.
He told the court Johnson was in the past "someone of great standing in the local community" but said he now had issues with alcohol.
Sentencing him to 26 weeks in prison Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes told him "you need to get your life back on track".
