2.2% pay increase for public sector workers

Fri, 23 Sep 2016

Public sector workers will get a 2.2% pay increase following negotiations between the Government and the unions.

After the two parties had been unable to agree how much to increase salaries by, the case went to the Public Services Commission's arbitrator, who set the increase.

The Government had wanted just a 1% rise, while the unions pushed for 4.4%.

As department budgets were set on the basis that the pay rise would be just 1%, departments will have to find £1.6m of the addition £2.95m within their existing budgets for the 2016-17 financial year.

The new rates of pay are to take effect from April 1st this year, so the increase will be backdated.
