Prom plans include shorter horse tramway

Fri, 02 Dec 2016

The Infrastructure Minister will ask Tynwald to approve plans for the reconstruction of Douglas promenade, including changes to the horse tramway.

Ray Harmer will present a report at this month's sitting of the Island's parliament recommending the twin tracks are kept between Broadway and Summerhill.

However, the tramway will be removed between the Sea Terminal and War Memorial, although a corridor will remain to allow for the future extension of the trams.

Further improvements will be made in the area of the Villa Marina and Gaiety Theatre to allow for a tramway terminus to be built.

In the report, other options included moving the tramlines, but it was found this would have too great an impact on parking.

The works, which will cost £23m and begin next September if approved, will be discussed when Tynwald sits later this month.
