The Policy and Reform Minister says creating a single resident record would speed up the way it deals with members of the public.

Chris Thomas will bring a motion to this month's sitting of Tynwald proposing a feasibility study into making such a record.

The Government currently has 60 databases and 200 systems storing personal information, which often means people have to undergo several ID checks while dealing with Government.

The record wouldn't include all information held by Government, with tax records and medical details among the data not to be used.

Creating such a database would require a change to legislation and would have to meet a number of international laws on data protection and privacy, including the Human Rights Act.

Mr Thomas insists that there are potential benefits for the public, but that the implications need to be examined first.
