Lords EU Committee warns Brexit could hurt Island's fishing, finance sectors

Fri, 24 Mar 2017

A House of Lords Committee believes the UK's Brexit negotiations could impact on the Island's fishing, agriculture and financial industries.

The EU Committee expects there to be potential tensions in a number of areas as the UK tries to exit the European Union while maintaining its relationships with the Crown Dependencies.

A report by the Committee says there could be conflict over the ability to trade freely with the UK and the EU, impacting on fishing, agriculture and manufacturing.

There could also be issues over regulating the financial services sector and maintaining the UK's Common Travel Area and being able to attract EU citizens to live and work.

As a result, the Committee insists the UK has a constitutional responsibility to represent the interests of the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey throughout the exit process.
