Steam Packet praises "extremely reliable" Ben-my-Chree

The Steam Packet Company insists the Ben-my-Chree is extremely reliable and undergoes rigorous maintenance after a technical fault with the vessel resulted in cancellations.

The Ben suffered a failure in one of the main engine cylinder heads yesterday and couldn't be fixed in Heysham - leaving the boat to return to the Island on one engine and without passengers overnight.

The company's chief executive says the vessel has been extremely reliable operating an intensive schedule for more than 18 years, and that equipment failures are unavoidable from time to time.

Engineers have been working on fixing the fault in Douglas today, and it's hoped the Ben will be ready for the 7.45pm sailing later today.
