New rules propose shorter working hours for schoolchildren

Sat, 15 Apr 2017

Rules restricting the number of hours schoolchildren are allowed to work each week could be about to get stricter.

The Department of Education and Children wants to restrict 15 year olds to 28 hours paid work per week - the limit is currently 35.

The Government believes the proposed change will allow students to focus on their studies.

However, the Department also wants to allow under 18s to work in nightclubs.

It's hoped 16 to 18 year olds will be able to carry out tasks like collecting glasses and cleaning on licensed premises.

Tynwald will be asked to approve the new rules at this month's sitting.
