MHK wants means testing for prescriptions

Thu, 03 Aug 2017

An MHK believes means testing is needed to determine who should pay more for prescriptions on the Isle of Man.

Onchan member Rob Callister, who was previously a political member of the Department of Health and Social Care, believes it's fair to ask those who can afford to pay more to do so, but that it should be linked to some form of testing.

However, Mr Callister raised concerns over plans to reduce free prescriptions for pregnant women, families on low incomes and those of pension age under 75.

The MHK admits it's vital that savings are made, but believes the Department need to understand how someone will be able to meet the increased cost of medication.

The DHSC announced plans to increase the cost of prescription items and reduce the number of people exempt from paying for medication earlier this week.
