Plans to make Castle Rushen more accessible submitted

Fri, 25 Aug 2017

Manx National Heritage wants to make changes to Castle Rushen to make it more accessible for wheelchair users.

The organisation has submitted a planning application seeking permission to make several alterations to the site, including adding a new ramp to improve access to the ground floor.

MNH also wants to relocate the visitor shop to the outer guard house and replace a bridge which it says is in poor repair.

Currently, visitors who are disabled or use wheelchairs are faced with a large threshold step when going from the Keep to the ground floor castle rooms, but it's hoped the ramp would significantly improve access.

The proposed changes are designed to have a minimal effect on the historic structure, causing as little disturbance to the historic fabric as possible.
