Two Government departments are working on a new strategy for making services and facilities available to victims of sexual assaults.

The Department of Home Affairs and the police are currently responsible for referring victims to forensic medical examiners rather than the Department of Health and Social Care.

However, member of the DHA Dr Alex Allinson told this week's sitting of the House of Keys that the two departments recently completed a review which found gaps in the provision of the service.

As a result, a steering group has been set up to produce a case which will lead to such services being jointly commissioned.

Dr Allinson also reiterated the Chief Constable's aim to ensure that sexual offences are pursued, but that the health care and treatment of victims is also prioritised.
