New king scallop licence conditions from Monday

Sat, 13 Jan 2018

The licence conditions for fishing vessels that catch king scallops will change from Monday.

After January 15th, vessels will be required to report daily at an Isle of Man port for catch inspection.

However, visiting vessels don't have to report as long as all fishing activity in one trip is confined to Manx waters.

The need to report to a port had been due to come into force last week, but the changes were delayed to allow for further negotiations with the Scottish Government.

Scottish skippers will now be able to return to their home ports and report their catch electronically.

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture warns any skipper who under-reports their catch faces having their licence suspended.

It's hoped the changes will slow the decline of king scallop stock.
