Police are urging dog owners to keep their pets under control near sheep ahead of the lambing season.

The Northern Neighbourhood Policing Team received a call about loose dogs near sheep yesterday, and is reminding those in the north that they live near working farms.

Officers say a startled sheep can spontaneously abort, so are urging those walking their dogs not to let their animals run on land that doesn't belong to them in case ewes are sheltering nearby.

Those walking their dogs on footpaths next to fields with sheep are also being asked to keep their dogs on leads.
