The Environment, Food and Agriculture Minister insists his Department will support local food producers who want to make their packaging more sustainable.

Geoffrey Boot revealed in this week's sitting of the House of Keys that DEFA can't support local companies with actual packaging but is able to provide support with the technology needed to make changes, such as sterilising bottles or equipment for packaging without plastic.

The Minister insists his Department won't impose measures forcing producers to use sustainable packaging as such firms often work on tight margins.

Mr Boot also confirmed his Department is working on reducing the number of plastic bags used by food producers as this year's Food and Drink Festival.

Chief Minister Howard Quayle recently asked a Council of Ministers committee to create a plan for reducing the Government's use of single-use plastics.
