Motorists urged to pay attention around horse riders

Mon, 26 Feb 2018

Police are urging motorists to pay attention to horse riders and don't assume its safe to overtake when encountering them on the Island's roads.

The Roads Policing Unit spoke to one driver yesterday after they overtook a horse rider who was signalling for the driver to wait before passing.

Officers say the rider and her young daughter who was on a second horse behind could have reached out and touched the vehicle involved.

The police warn horses can be unpredictable and that their riders will have a clearer view of the road and the animal's temperament, so signals given by riders should be adhered to.

The RPU expects more road users such as horse riders, cyclists and walkers will be using the Island's roads as the weather improves in the coming months.
