Fire service, police investigate suspicious hedgerow fires

Thu, 05 Jul 2018

The Island's fire service and police are investigating two suspicious hedgerow fires in the west of the Island.

Firefighters from Peel were first called out just after 4pm on Tuesday to tackle a 20m hedgerow fire on Arrasey Road in Glen Maye.

Less than two hours later, crews were asked to tackle another hedgerow fire just 300m away from the site of the first incident.

The second blaze was developing quickly due to thick gorse and a light breeze, resulting in an area of 100m by 30m being affected.

Due to the timings and locations of the fires, an investigation into the circumstances is underway.

Members of the public are asked to be vigilant and call the police is they see anything suspicious.

The fire service is also reiterating its message for the public to take extreme care as the current spell of hot and dry weather continues.
