Port Erin Commissioners outline Cosy Nook plans

Tue, 27 Nov 2018

The Cosy Nook in Port Erin will remain closed next summer, as the village local authority implements its long-term plan for the popular cafe.

Port Erin Commissioners would like to see the eatery open all year and are in the process of choosing an architect to draw up designs for the site.

Chairman Nick Watterson says redeveloping the Cosy Nook so it last decades, rather than a short-term fix, will give ratepayers value for money.

“Whatever your views on what the site should look like, everyone would agree they want something there permanently that will last into the future”.

The chairman states it’s not his intention to have a franchise such as Costa become tenants, and ideally an independent operator to ‘put their heart and soul into it’ would take on the cafe.

Friction between the local authority and the current tenants of the Cosy Nook arose again earlier in the year. The operators were told by a commissioner to be out of the property as soon as the lease expires in May 2019.

Mr Watterson says the relationship with the current tenants hasn’t improved, but once the works have been completed, they may reapply to run the cafe.

Speaking to Local Democracy Reporter Ewan Gawne he outlined the commissioners’ long-term vision for the cafe:
