‘Something needs to give’ on Peel Road congestion

Fri, 14 Dec 2018

‘It’s like a car park for those waiting to get into McDonalds’ – that’s how the leader of Douglas Council has described traffic congestion on Peel Road.

David Christian says the main route is ‘completely backlogged’ at busy times and can’t see the situation improving with more ‘drive-thru’ outlets in the area.

Plans have been lodged for the construction of a KFC and a Starbucks along the road.

In Tynwald last week, Infrastructure Minister Ray Harmer was pressed on the Peel Road congestion problem by Middle MHK Bill Shimmins.

The Minister replied ‘little action’ could be taken, but the situation would be monitored.

Mr Christian is unimpressed by the department’s commitment to tackling the issue and believes ‘something needs to give’.

He’s been speaking to Local Democracy Reporter Ewan Gawne:
