Increase in 'sextortion' incidents

Thu, 09 May 2019

Isle of Man Constabulary say they've received an increase in 'sextortion' incidents.

Sextortion is defined as blackmail in which sexual information or images are used to extort sexual favours and/or money from the victim.

They claim to have used the victim's password to install spying malware on their computer. The criminals then go on to say they have recorded the victim watching adult material, by activating the victim's webcam.

The scam is very convincing as the initial email actually does include the genuine password the victim uses for one of their online accounts.

Officers are encouraging Manx residents to check out the Action Fraud website for further information on the scam.
