Two RAF Typhoons have escorted a passenger plane to Stansted Airport after a security alert.

The Air India flight, which was en route from Mumbai to New Jersey, was forced to land mid-morning.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed it scrambled the jets from RAF Coningsby at supersonic speed.

Flight radar shows the aircraft had reached Ireland before turning back and being escorted over the Isle of Man to the UK.

The runway has since reopened.
