Old postboxes to be auctioned off

Mon, 22 Jul 2019

Isle of Man Post Office is putting a number of its decommissioned post boxes up for auction at the end of July.

More than 40 post boxes in pillar box, pole and wall mounted form and in varying degrees of condition, dating back to the Victorian era, Edward VII, George V and VI through to Queen Elizabeth II, will go under the hammer for any interested buyers and collectors. The estimated catalogue prices range from a minimum of £60 up to £3,000.

The auction will be undertaken by Chrystals Auctions on 27th July. Viewing will be available at Isle of Man Post Office’s Headquarters, Spring Valley Industrial Estate, Douglas on the day between 09.00hrs and 11.30hrs while the sale will get underway at the Saleroom located in 8-10 Allan Street, Douglas from 11.30am.

John Higginbotham, Late Processing and Fleet Manager, of Isle of Man Post Office, said: “These boxes were taken out of service a long time ago and are surplus to the business’ needs, therefore by auctioning them they will hopefully be rehoused, and possibly restored, by collectors of postal memorabilia and the like. There is no change to post boxes which are already in operation across the Island and customers are encouraged to check collection times when posting as they do differ from box to box.”
