We won't be cutting our membership – Ramsey Commissioners

Mon, 23 Sep 2019

Ramsey commissioners have ruled out cutting down their numbers, despite suggestions there are too many members.

Compared to other local authorities, the town has one of the highest levels of representation, with twelve seats available on the board, the most after Douglas with eighteen.

Members discussed the prospect of a reduction at a meeting held this week, but were in favour of maintaining the status quo.

Despite suggestions from chairman Andy Cowie that Ramsey was overrepresented, commissioner Juan McGuinness argued the board’s diversity and size is a strength.

‘We’ve got a good set of opinion between us, and we don’t cost that much’.

Commissioner Julia Wedgwood felt that there are lots of shared areas of responsibility within the authority, all of which require ‘proper oversight’.

Mr Cowie pointed out that a reduction could ensure certain processes speed up, to which Mr McGuinness countered: ‘Look, barely anyone is talking at the moment for this debate, so I’m not so sure fewer members would ‘speed things up’.

The debate was prompted under the ‘matters raised by the public’ section of the meeting, and was the first time this request for discussion has been used.
