Members of the public are being reminded not to damage the Island's greenlanes when exploring the countryside.

 

Reports have been received by IOM Government of motorbikes illegally driving in various locations.

 

Greenlanes are unsurfaced roads and paths for sharing with walkers, cyclists, horse riders, motorbikes and 4x4 vehicles.

 

Last weekend, motorbikes were seen travelling up to the summit of Beinn-Y-Phott near Brandywell, causing damage to open heathland.

 

Similar activity was reported at Ballaugh Plantation and on beaches in the north of the Island. 

 

IOM Government are reminding people that it's an offence to ride or drive motor vehicles on the uplands, in woodlands and on beaches without permission. 

 

Geoffrey Boot MHK Minister for Environment, Food and Agriculture said: 'It is disappointing to see motorcyclists disobeying the law by riding in areas where this activity is not allowed. The recent incident involved a group of visiting bikers riding over sensitive heathland up to the summit on Beinn y Phott, disregarding the environmental impact of their actions.

 

'This issue will continue to be monitored and offenders will be prosecuted where necessary.’ 

 

There are currently seasonal closures in place on some of the upland tracks to protect the environment throughout the winter.
