A well-known Manx literary prize is being relaunched for students to take part in.

The Hall Caine Writing Prize grants Isle of Man students of all ages the opportunity to write their own work of fiction.

Founded by Gloria Rukeyser, great-granddaughter of novelist Sir Hall Caine, it was first established in 2010 to 2011.

After a couple of years' absence, the Prize is being relaunched along with Manx Litfest, working closely with Mrs Rukeyser and her family and the Departent of Education, Sport and Culture.

It's open to students of all ages who are in full-time education on-Island, who are invited to pen a short story, a memoir, or the opening chapter of a novel.

Judges will look for strong characterisation, good narrative flow and, above all, imaginative storytelling.

This year's theme is 'The first time I...', with information distributed to primary schools, secondary schools and colleges.

Mrs Rukeyser, herself a writer and journalist, said: 'I'm delighted that the Prize is being relaunched and would like to thank the team at Manx Litfest and everyone within the Island's schools and colleges for supporting it. This year's theme really resonates with me, because it opens the door to so many different possible stories for the young writers to explore.'

The Prize has four categories:
  • Primary, in which entrants must write up to 500 words, with prizes of £100, £75 and £50;
  • Key Stage 3 – up to 1000 words with prizes of £150, £100 and £50;
  • Key Stage 4 – up to 1500 words with prizes of £175, £125 and £75
  • Key Stage 5/University College Isle of Man – up to 2000 words with prizes of £200, £150 and £100. Up to 10 highly commended entrants in each category will receive prizes of £25.

Entries close on Friday 24th January.

All entries must be accompanied by an entry form and entries themselves must not carry identifying markers, such as the author’s name or school and must contain an accurate word count, or they will not be considered.
