Renewable Energy Generation Hub at Andreas Airfield

Wed, 22 Nov 2023

A community consultation is being held next week (November 29) in Andreas regarding the potential for a renewable energy generation hub at Andreas Airfield.

The company, IPV Flexgen is working with the landowners of Andreas Airfield and evaluating the potential for a generation hub that could produce up to 25% of the electricity required by the Isle of Man.

The proposed privately funded project would incorporate a mix of renewable energy technologies to provide greater levels of daily power availability and grid stability. The technologies under consideration are:

  • Anaerobic Digestion (AD)
  • Ground-Mounted Solar Photovoltaics (Solar PV)
  • On shore Wind Technology
  • Battery Storage

The AD plant and the Solar PV will be the cornerstones of the project, which it says will provide “greater energy sovereignty and local economic growth”.

AD is a process in which bacteria break down organic matter – such as grass or manure – in the absence of oxygen.

Energy FM spoke to Ed Jessamine, Managing Director of IPV Flexgen who explained the benefits of an AD plant compared to other renewable energy options, along with a route to market it would give farmers if the project goes ahead.

The AD plant would produce methane which can be used for generating electricity.

IPV Flexgen has carried out a series of planning evaluations and believes that Andreas Airfield is an ideal site for both energy and commercial development.

The company would like to have an open dialogue with the local community to see if its ideas are something that the community might welcome.

The community meeting will be held at Andreas Community Hall on Wednesday, November 29 at 7:30pm.
